Celebrate the coming of summer with traditional May Dolling.

May Day is also known as Garland Day and in most of Western Europe it signifies the end of the dark, dormant winter. Children used to collect flowers and greenery, fasten these onto sticks and include the shape of a doll. This project allows children to make their own decoration, with or without a doll, which can be used as a stick in a traditional Morris or Maypole dance.

Start with a tissue paper circle. Cut around the edge to make the shape of flower petals. Give your circles different petal-shaped edges by cutting zig-zags, fringes, wavy edges or just randomly tear.

Repeat this process as many times as you like experimenting with different sizes. These shapes are going to be stacked together to form a full flower. Use a selection of toning colours or lots of different colours for each flower.

Using a pipe cleaner as the stem of the flower, gently push it through the centre of each circle. Make sure you have enough petals by threading at least 6 circles onto each stem. Don’t push them together too tightly, and separate the tissue layers to form a flower shape.

Make as many flowers as you want for your bunch. We’ve gone with 3 per bunch.

To create your May Doll, make a simple stick figure out of pipe cleaners. Then just cover it in several layers of papier mâché or Mod Roc, until you have a doll-shaped model. Make sure none of the stick figure is peeping through.

Paint a face on to your doll and using card or tissue paper cut out colourful clothes, shoes and even hair or a hat. Dress your doll and when everything is securely stuck, it will be ready to add to your bunch of flowers.

To assemble your May Doll, simply gather your pre-made flowers into a bunch. Lay your doll on top of the flowers or even in the middle of the bunch and secure using string or a pipe cleaner to tie them all together.

Tip!

Instead of doing individual dolls you could create a big flower garland to hang from the ceiling that all the class could contribute to.
