Dioramas can bring to life famous moments in history or tales of myths and legends! Ask pupils to bring in a shoebox.
Measure out a spare piece of card that will fit in the base of your shoebox. Paint the shoebox and the measured card all over with some black paint. Leave it to dry.
Cut out six rocket shapes from gummed paper. Then use these as a template to make four identical cardboard rocket shapes.
With a dab of PVA glue stick the tip of each cardboard rocket at an angle to a long pipe cleaner.
Now make the tails for the paper rockets. Wrap a pipe cleaner around a pen or pencil and then slide it off so you have a coil. Repeat four times. Straighten one end of each pipe cleaner and using PVA glue stick one to each rocket bottom. Leave everything to dry.
Stick some coloured cotton balls, sequins and two of the gummed paper rockets to the painted black cardboard. This will fill your night sky with a bright and colourful firework display! Once dry, slot it into the back of the shoebox.
Make your bonfire! For the “wood” we’ve used strips of painted brown card but you could use twigs to give a more realistic effect. Glue them to the centre of the diorama floor to resemble a wood fire and then glue scrunched red and yellow film or tissue paper to the top of the wood fire to mimic flames.
Now grab your four gummed rockets, lick the paper and press each one onto a cardboard rocket, lining it up carefully and colour side facing out of the diorama. Poke four holes through the roof of your box and, from the inside of the box, insert one straight pipe cleaner with the rocket attached through each of the four holes. Adjust the length of each pipe cleaner to arrange your rockets and fix the end with a dab of PVA. You can decorate the outside of the box if you have time.
Your diorama is complete!
Tip!
You can make dioramas on any theme. Why not try Christmas or Easter?
