Brush the drawing gum onto the black canvas to mask off areas that need to remain free from water-based colour. The latex-based liquid is coloured so you can easily see where you are applying it.

You can use a more delicate paintbrush to achieve small detailed areas that you don’t want to cover with paint.

Once the gum has dried, apply a thin layer of acrylic paint over your design using a foam brush. Your background is now complete. You could also try other colours here or build up texture!

When your background layer has dried, gently rub off the drawing gum with your finger. It can also peel off altogether (See image).

Once peeled off, your design will be revealed. TIP: Keep rubbing these areas for a crisp and clear outline.

Next, build up your design by using a pen-touch metallic marker for detail. It should stand out well against the black canvas.

Once finished, ensure your design is fully dry before hanging!
